Weird Geography
The Largest Wave
The highest wave ever recorded was in Lituya Bay on the southern coast of Alaska. In July 1958 a massive landslide was triggered by an earthquake, causing a tsunami wave that reached an impressive 1720 feet (524m) high! Amazingly, two fishing boats in the bay survived the event, although a third boat was washed inland, killing its crew.
If you are wondering how the height was measured - scientists just looked for the high water mark on the surrounding hills, then measured down to sea level.
The Longest Place Name
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch
This is the name of a town in North Wales (United Kingdom). The name, translated from Welsh, means "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu
This is a Maori name for a place in New Zealand. In English it translates as "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'land eater,' played his flute to his loved one."
But...
The Guinness Book Of Records suggests that the winner is the Thai word for the city of Bangkok.
Krungthepmahanakonbowornratanakosinmahintarayudyayamahadiloponoparatanarajthaniburiromudomrajniwesmahasatarnamornpimarnavatarsatitsakattiyavisanukamphrasit
When translated this means...
The land of angels, the great city of immortality, various of devine gems, the great angelic land unconquerable, land of nine noble gems, the royal city, the pleasant capital place of the grand royal palace, forever land of angels and reincarnated spirits, predestined and created by the highest devas.
